Protein Web Quest Tasks

First Task:  Describe, in detail, protein structure.

In this task, you are to describe all four levels of conformation and identify the bonds that characterize each level.  What forces help maintain the shape at each level?

Second Task: Why would proteins have been candidates for transmission of genetic information?

Consider the requirements for heritability.  The molecule will need to be easily and consistently replicated and the molecule will need to be highly variable since individuals demonstrate great variation. Also, since every cell needs direction, the molecule should be present in every cell.

Now that you are familiar with protein conformation, support the point of view that proteins could have been the macromolecule associated with transmission of genetic information. After you have written this paragraph, refute this point of view in the next paragraph, once again using what you have learned about protein structure.

Third Task: What are the functions of protein in a cell and in an organism?
In this task you are to list and explain, succinctly, the functions of proteins.
