When in doubt, answer "proteins!"

This is a brief web quest to study protein structure.  Although it is hard for you to imagine, at one point in time, it was not known what macromolecule was responsible for transmission of heredity.  For a long time, scientists studied both proteins and nucleic acids looking for clues to indicate which macromolecule transmitted heritable information.  Your task has three parts; first you are to describe in detail, the four levels of conformation of a protein.  Second you are to write a paragraph indicating why proteins would ever have been considered to carry genetic information.  Then you will follow that paragraph with an argument why they would not be a good candidate for transmission of genetic information.  Include in this paragraph in what roles proteins do function in the body.
